For the next thirty minutes, I was pretending to read the novel with me while checking my phone every minute by the clock. My ears were so keyed to hear the phone ring that I was not even thinking about anything else. I was just willing the phone to ring. I was also wandering why he got my number from Derin and not from me directly; after all we saw in school today and he didn’t indicate any interest in having my number. He had also given me the time and directions to the function we were supposed to go this weekend so I kept thinking what he needed to call me for.
About ten minutes later, after doing what I’ve been doing for the last thirty minutes and still on the same page of Danielle Steele, I decided to go disturb my sister for a bit maybe that will take my mind off this stupid call that is supposed to come. He might not even be planning to call me, maybe he just wanted to have my number and I’m here wasting my time waiting for the phone to ring.
Cherie’s eyes were glued to her phone when I got to her room. She’s always on the phone chatting with her friends or checking out celebrities on twitter and Facebook. She looked up as I entered her room.
“Well, what have we here? The high and mighty queen in my room? To what do I owe the pleasure?” she eyed me playfully
“Quit playing.” I laughed. “I was bored in my room so I decided to come disturb you.” I sat on her bed.
“You are never bored Bella. Have your books deserted you? They are your best friends now.”
I punched her playfully. “Smart ass. My books have not deserted me but they are not doing the trick tonight. What are you doing?”
“Chatting with your friends?”
“You know me too well.”
“Yes I do. So, how are you enjoying our new school?”
“It’s cool. I’m trying to have fun. I’m just tired of all the moving around and having to start over. I miss my friends, you know.”
“Yeah, I understand. I used to have the impression that you enjoy it. You always seem so excited.”
“Maybe when I was younger and I could forget easily. Now I have started building memories so it’s a lot harder.”
“Yeah. I never liked moving around even though it was more difficult for me to make friends. Maybe that was a factor; the fact that I knew if I make friends it doesn’t matter as we will soon part.”
“But it must have been very boring for you.”
I smiled. “As you said, I don’t get bored as long as I have my books.”
“We all know that. It seems to be working out better for you here though. At least, now you have Derin and Cherie.”
“Yes, it’s exciting. People here are so warm and receiving.”
“I don’t think it’s because they are warm and receiving, I think you just opened yourself up to new experiences and that is why you see in a different way now.”
“You are absolutely right. How insightful.”
“That’s me. The insightful mama.” She guffawed
I laughed. My phone rang just then and on checking the caller ID, I saw it was an unknown number. My heart skipped a beat. Could it be Chris? It will definitely be right? I’m not expecting any call except Chris’s. I quickly picked it before time ran out.
“Hello.” I said quietly, tentatively
“Hello.” I immediately recognized his voice even though I’ve never had it on phone before. That’s how tuned in I am to him. “It’s Chris.” He added unnecessarily.
I waved bye to my sister and quickly exited her room. I so do not want to receive this call in her presence with her watching and smirking. I relaxed on my bed, ready to be enticed.
“Oh. Hi Chris.” I didn’t want him to know that I knew he was the one speaking.
“Hi Bella.” He saluted again. He cleared his throat. Is he nervous? That will make two of us then. “How are you?”
“I’m fine. And you?”
“I’m fine too. I got your number from your friend Derin. Hope you don’t mind?”
“Why didn’t you ask me for it?”
“I wanted to but you disappeared after school, I couldn’t find you anywhere so when I saw Derin I decided to ask her.”
“Okay, that’s fine. So what’s up?” I asked trying to sound upbeat
“Nothing really. I just wanted to check on you, see how you are doing this evening.”
“Wow, that’s so nice of you.”
There was a pause. I waited with bated breath. “I wasn’t trying to be nice.”
I didn’t expect that. Is he about to say something epic? Oh Bello, stop this melodrama, I chastise myself. “What were you trying to be then?”
Really? He is doing this on phone? I’ve been dreaming of this for the past few weeks and he decides to do it on phone? I was too happy; I didn’t know what to say.
“Hello? You still there?” he sounded breathless
“Yes, I am.” I decided to go with the truth. “I don’t know what to say.”
“By now you must know how much I like you. Scratch that; I don’t like you, I find you irresistible.”
Swoon alert! What do I say now? I’ve never been so tongue-tied. Play it cool Bella, play it cool. I warned myself. “That’s good to know.” I replied
“Good to know? I just told you how I feel about you and that’s all you could say?” he didn’t sound angry. Thank God he didn’t sound angry. In fact, he sounded almost teasing.
“I…….I mean….I…” I stammered
“It’s okay Bella. I know my actions have not really mirrored my feelings, I was just confused. I have never had a girl affect me like you do and naturally I fought my feelings.”
I decided to brave it. He has been truthful so far and I needed to be too. “I like you too, Chris.”
I could sense his smile. “That’s good to know too.”
“Let’s leave it at that so we don’t jinx it. Where do we go from here?”
“You know what to do Chris.” You have to break up with your tall, fair, pretty girlfriend. I thought to myself
“Yes, I know what to do.” He concurred. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Good night then.”
“Good night.” I didn’t want the call to end.
“I like you a lot.” He said. I could hear his smile again
I smiled too. “I like you a lot too.”
