Can Piracy help me as an Author?

Piracy of our eBooks can be the major challenge we face as authors trying to sell our works. The idea that someone, somewhere is earning money from our blood and sweat can be very annoying and disheartening. It is the highest form of disrespect to us and our works.

But what if piracy can be turned into a blessing? What do I mean, you say? Come along with me…

Imitation, they say is the highest form of flattery. Have you ever thought that for someone to share your eBook freely on their sites or social media, it means they really love it? They actually felt your eBook was good enough to be shared.

How then can you turn this seeming curse into a blessing? Here are three ways:

  1. Include links to your other books

At the beginning and end of your book, include a list of your other works and add a link where they can be purchased. You can also add a link to your author website. This way, anyone who reads your book for free will have the opportunity to purchase other works by you.

  1. Build your Email list

Link directly to your author website and offer a freebie. The freebie could be the first few chapters of your new book. This way, you are creating awareness around your new eBook and people will be able to purchase it if they love the story. Again, you are also using the opportunity to build your email list.

  1. Control the narrative

As a self-published author, you can control the sites that get to share your books. You can do this by uploading your own versions of your eBook to the popular pirating websites. This way, you control the files being uploaded and this will be files which include links to your website and links to purchase your other works.

In essence, piracy could turn out to be a way to get more of your books read and this is your primary goal as a writer.
